Tracking is a K9 sport where a dog follows a human scent path which has been placed along the ground by a track layer who has walked in a determined direction. The dog locates the particular human scent on the ground and follows it to the end. They do this all due to their incredible sense of smell. As you see in the videos below, the dog and handler work as a team to successfully complete the track.

Tracking is a CKC and AKC sanctioned dog sport event where participants earn titles such as their TD ( Tracking Dog), TDX ( Tracking Dog of Excellence), UTD (Urban Tracking Dog) and UTDX ( Urban Tracking Dog of Excellence). For more information on these titles contact the CKC web site.

I teach all levels of the CKC and AKC sanctioned tracking, as well as tracking for recreation, as some dog owners aren’t interested in competing but recognize that their dogs really enjoy the sport. I often suggest reactive dogs take up tracking as part of their rehabilitation, to improve their self-confidence and impulse control.

All ages and all breeds (and mixed breeds) can track, as long as they have a nose! There are some breeds that excel at the sport, such as sporting breeds like retrievers and hounds as well as working breeds like Border Collies and German Shepherd Dogs. But a specific breed is not necessary to have fun and enjoy this addicting sport!
A beginner foundation tracking session is typically 5 weeks long with each class approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour in length depending on the dogs progress.
The first lesson is $150. Each subsequent lesson is $75
Wilderness ( also referred to as Man-tracking/Trailing/Mock SAR) is also popular and although it is not a sanctioned event in the CKC yet…it may be very soon.
Here is another fun video of a Billy an adorable and incredible tracking mixed breed, doing a wilderness track with his owner Brian.
Tracking is an all weather sport. Sun, Rain or SNOW!!… Watch this incredible track through a snow event with Griffin, a Black GSD with owner Matt
